Wix SEO and AI Search Optimization
Wix sites rank. What Wix will not do is let you fix things the way a self-hosted site would, so the work is about knowing exactly where the platform stops and getting everything available on this side of that line.
What Wix will not let you change
Starting here rather than with a feature list, because an agency that has not hit these walls will quote you work the platform cannot deliver.
Custom crawl rules
You get per-page and category level toggles for hiding pages from search, not a robots file you can write rules into. Any strategy that depends on custom crawl directives has to be redesigned around what the toggles can express.
The underlying markup
The wrapper elements and the render path belong to Wix. You cannot restructure the DOM or remove what the platform loads, which means Core Web Vitals work happens in what you do control: image weight, fonts, how many apps are installed, and how much is on each page.
Bulk edits
No console injection, no programmatic find and replace. Every title, description and heading is edited by hand through the editor. On a 30 page site that is nothing. On a 300 page site it is the single biggest cost in the project, and it should be priced before anyone starts.
The sitemap and parameter URLs
The sitemap is generated for you and is not editable. Parameter handling is not under your control the way it is on a self-hosted CMS. Both are usually fine, and both occasionally are not, which is worth checking early rather than discovering later.
Where the wins actually are
Everything in this list is fully under your control on Wix, and on most Wix sites almost none of it has been done properly.
- Titles and descriptions, per page. The fastest change available, and the one most Wix sites have left on the platform default.
- Heading hierarchy, internal links and anchor text. Where Wix sites usually lose is a homepage holding all the authority and no internal paths out of it.
- Slugs on pages and blog posts, plus redirects through the URL redirect manager when they change.
- Image alt text and image weight. On Wix this is one of the few genuine speed levers you hold.
- Custom structured data. Wix accepts your own JSON-LD per page, with real limits: up to five markups on a page, each under 7,000 characters, JSON-LD only. Those limits are the reason schema on Wix has to be planned rather than pasted in from a generator.
GEO on Wix
Wix has moved faster on AI search than most platforms, and some of what other agencies still sell as custom work is now built in. It is worth knowing which is which before you pay for it.
The platform already generates an llms.txt summary of your site, reports which AI bots are crawling you and how often, separates AI training bots from bots answering a live user question, scores your visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and pushes updates to Bing through IndexNow. You do not need to buy any of that from me.
What is left is the part no platform can do for you: stating clearly and consistently what your business is so a model can describe it, restructuring pages so the answer comes first instead of after the brand story, planning the five schema slots per page so the important entities are the ones declared, getting your key facts stated somewhere other than your own site so they can be corroborated, and then actually asking the engines what they say about you and reading the answer.
Editor or Studio changes the answer
Wix Studio and the classic Wix Editor do not give you the same controls, and some of the AI reporting sits on the Studio side. Which one your site is built in is the first thing I check, because it decides what is genuinely possible before anything gets scoped.
How a Wix project runs
- Establish the ceiling. Editor or Studio, which plan, how many pages, what is installed. This tells us what is on the table.
- Read Search Console. What you already appear for, what is indexed, what is not, and which queries are close.
- Fix what is controllable, in order of return. Titles and descriptions, then heading structure and internal links, then images and page weight.
- Plan the schema. Five slots per page is a real constraint, so we decide what deserves them rather than adding everything.
- Measure on the same queries. Before and after on what we touched, not a site-wide traffic number that moves for unrelated reasons.
Questions people ask first
Should I move off Wix?
Usually no, and I will say so even though a migration would be a larger project for me. For most sites the limits above are not what is holding rankings back, and a migration risks losing what you already have. It becomes a genuine question when the site is large enough that hand editing every page is the main cost, or when you need control the platform simply does not offer.
Can a Wix site outrank a WordPress competitor?
Yes. Content quality, search intent and links decide far more than the platform. The platform decides how much friction you face doing the work, not the ceiling on where you can rank.
What access do you need?
Contributor access to the Wix site and read access to Search Console. I do not need billing access or ownership transfer, and your domain and accounts stay in your name.
Start with the ceiling check
Send me your Wix URL. You get back whether you are on Editor or Studio, what the platform will and will not allow on your site, and which of the controllable items is costing you the most right now.
